How to Read PSX Company Financials

A practical guide to financial periods, sales, profit, EPS, margins and the difference between reported and derived company data.

Begin with the business and reporting period

Before comparing ratios, read what the company does. A manufacturer, a bank and an investment holding company earn money in different ways. Revenue labels, leverage and accounting measures therefore need business context. A company’s name and sector alone do not explain how it earns cash.

Next identify whether a figure is annual, quarterly or trailing twelve months. A June-year-end company and a December-year-end company may publish results for different periods. Growth calculated between unequal periods can be misleading even when both numbers are accurate. Keep the period and source beside every observation.

Separate revenue, earnings and cash

Sales measure recorded revenue, while profit after tax reflects income after reported expenses and tax. Neither number automatically equals cash received. Receivables, inventory, depreciation and one-off gains can create gaps between accounting profit and operating cash flow.

Illustrative example: sales of PKR 1,000 million and profit after tax of PKR 100 million imply a 10% net margin. If comparable prior-year sales were PKR 800 million, sales growth is 25%. These are teaching numbers, not a live company statement. To judge cash generation you still need a verified cash-flow statement.

Use EPS carefully

EPS is earnings per share for the stated period. A share issue, split or bonus can change the share count and affect comparisons. Check whether historical EPS was restated before calling a change operational growth. Negative or unusually small earnings also make valuation multiples hard to interpret.

The PSX screener may publish a TTM P/E. Dividing the observed price by that multiple derives an implied TTM EPS. That is different from extracting EPS from a signed annual report. A derived number should be labeled so readers do not mistake it for independently verified report content.

A reusable reading checklist

Record the source, period and units. PSX financial tables often use PKR thousands, while EPS is PKR per share. Check sales, operating costs, profit and margins together, then ask whether unusual gains, taxes or finance costs changed the result. Compare the business with relevant peers rather than all listed companies.

If cash flow, debt maturity, auditor opinion or related-party notes are missing, list them as unanswered questions. An educational score cannot fill those gaps. Open the official report and its notes before treating a tidy summary as a complete picture.
